Liverpool legend admits he would have loved Reds to sign now-Spurs star

John Barnes has admitted he would have loved to see Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Yves Bissouma this summer.

Bissouma was the third of Tottenham’s six new summer signings to arrive through the door at the North London club, with the Lilywhites paying an initial £25m, which could rise to £30m including add-ons (Simon Stone).

Some pundits like Arsenal legend Paul Merson have claimed that Spurs’ capture of the Mali international is the best pound-for-pound signing of the summer (Sportskeeda).

The former Seagulls star tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month and thus did not play a part in Tottenham’s first two pre-season friendlies against Team K-League and Sevilla.

Spurs fans got their first glimpse of the midfielder in a Tottenham shirt in the club’s 2-1 win over Rangers at the Ibrox last Saturday as he replaced Rodrigo Bentancur at half-time.

Barnes has said that he would have loved to see Bissouma line up for Jurgen Klopp’s men next season.

The former England winger told The Liverpool Echo: “I would have loved to have seen us (Liverpool) go for Yves Bissouma from Brighton.

“I have to say, I think he is a really, really good player and Tottenham have themselves a good signing but with the players we already have I don’t think they need too much.”

I would not be surprised if Conte started with a midfield pairing of Hojbjerg and Bentancur for the first few games of the season, given that the pair would be further along in their fitness and are well versed with the Italian’s system. However, I fully expect Bissouma to become a regular starter within the first couple of months.
