Liverpool legend claims out of form Spurs man is a ‘victim of his own success’

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has claimed that Heung-min Son has become a victim of his own success.

The 30-year-old experienced a tough start following his move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and only made 13 starts in the Premier League during his first campaign in England (transfermarkt).

The forward admitted that was even tempted to depart and return to Germany after just a single season at Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino assured him that he would become a key player in the future (Goal).

Son has become a key figure at Tottenham, having enjoyed his most prolific season in front of goal last term which saw him scoop the Premier League golden boot alongside Liverpool’s Mo Salah.

This season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for the South Korean, who after a barren spell in front of goal, found himself dropped to the bench by Antonio Conte for the visit of Leicester City in September, where he came into the game having not scored in his six league appearances, registering just one assist.

The hat-trick he scored against the Foxes remains the only time he has found the back of the net in the top flight this season and saw his luck take another wicked turn when he fractured his eye socket recently against Marseille.

Fowler has claimed that opposition players have improved their game when coming up against the South Korean, while Conte’s tactical set-up has also not played in his favour.

He told Midnite: “Well, Heung-Min Son has probably been a victim of himself. He’s obviously injured at the minute and on his day, he’s one of the superstars in the Premier League. He’s been a victim of his own success. When you are as good as he is, then teams and players when they’re coming up against him seem to raise their game and rise to the occasion. I think that’s probably what he’s found out.

“Obviously, the way Tottenham have played is slightly different as well. I know he was there last year with Conte but the formation and his tactics maybe heavily outweighed the offensive side of players as opposed to defensive. But yeah, he’s been an absolute victim of his own success because he’s been so good.

“It can happen all the time, players will go in and out of form, look at Mo Salah for example. Salah has been scoring goals in the Champions League, but he’s not hit the ground running in the Premier League with goals. The same question goes for Son, we’re talking about wonderful players who when they come up against certain teams, these teams try a little bit harder against great players and that’s unfortunately what you’ve got to deal with. There’s no doubt that when Son comes back from his injury, he’ll be the player that we’ve all seen and witnessed.”

Son has had a difficult season and the hope among Spurs fans will be that he can hit the ground running once his involvement with South Korea at the World Cup comes to an end. Harry Kane has certainly missed the presence of Son in recent weeks, with no other player running in behind to create space, especially with the absence of Kulusevski.
