Liverpool legend claims Tottenham star is ‘De Bruyne-esque’ – Not Harry Kane

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Tottenham Hotspur winger Dejan Kulusevski is similar in style to Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

Kulusevski has been a great signing for Tottenham since he switched from Juventus back in the January transfer window. He instantly formed a great partnership with Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane, which helped them qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Kulusevski has primarily been focused on playing as a creator for Kane and Son, and he has found success in that role. Although he has nine assists from 19 Premier League matches (Transfermarkt), Kulusevski’s six goals show he’s a scorer in his own right too.

That was the case in Southampton’s recent 4-1 hammering as Kulusevski scored and assisted to help his side to all three points on opening day.

He was influential in that fixture from start to finish as his overall game was just as excellent as his two-goal involvements, which earned him a spot in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week as a result (Premier League).

Liverpool great Souness has now made quite a significant claim by comparing Kulusevski to De Bruyne.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Souness said: “Kulusevski, I think, watch him. I think he’s De Bruyne-esque if you like, and he’s 22 years old.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Kulusevski and De Bruyne are far apart in terms of their profile, but Souness could be basing his claim on their similarities during direct attacking phases. The Swede’s ability to drive with the ball and spray passes to his teammates can be deemed similar to the Belgian midfielder during transitions.

With years being left in his playing career, one may wonder the extent to which Kulusevski can develop under someone like Antonio Conte. Hence, while such a comparison may seem far-fetched and reactionary right now, it may make sense in the future should the winger continue to build on this trajectory.
