Jose Mourinho has been warned away from potentially signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma by Liverpool legend Steve Nicol.
Nicol seemed baffled at the speculation surrounding Mourinho’s reported interest in Zouma with the pair having previously worked together at Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese manager is determined to improve his defence this summer with veteran centre-back, Jan Vertonghen set for the exit door when his contract is set to expire at the end of the season (Ham High).
“Why? Did [Mourinho] not see [Zouma] the first time he played for him?” Nicol told ESPN.
“No offence, Kurt Zouma’s a solid centre-back but that’s all he is.”
“Tottenham need to be pushing to get back in the Champions League at the very least and unfortunately I don’t think Kurt Zouma’s part of that.
“There will be a reason why Chelsea would let Zouma go and that’s because he’s not pushing them into the Champions League or solidifying them in the Champions League.
Reports have linked Zouma with a potential move to Spurs with Mourinho apparently keen on reuniting with the 25-year-old Frenchman (The Sun).
Nicol does not believe Zouma could offer Mourinho the significant improvement which he is looking for to turn Spurs back into consistent Champions League qualifiers.
The Frenchman was heavily criticised for his performance following Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United on the weekend by former Spur, Gus Poyet (Metro).

I have to agree, I do not think Zouma will make much difference in the direction of the club. However, it all comes down to our slim budget and Zouma is likely to be the best of the options which we are able to afford.
