Liverpool legend reveals why he cannot see Spurs winning the Premier League title

Jamie Carragher has insisted that he cannot see anyone apart from Liverpool or Manchester City winning the Premier League title this year despite Virgil van Dijk being ruled out for the long term through injury.

Neither Man City nor Liverpool have started the season particularly well and both sides have looked extremely shaky at the back at times.

The Reds’ problems have now been compounded with Van Dijk out with an ACL injury after finding himself on the receiving end of a nasty tackle from Jordan Pickford during the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol believes Spurs are one of three sides, along with Man City and Chelsea, who can challenge Liverpool for the title on the back of the Dutch defender’s injury (ESPN FC via Metro).

However, Carragher has confidently predicted that he cannot see anyone other than last season’s top two going all the way. Although, he did insist that the winners will need far fewer points than they did in the last couple of seasons.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender said (as relayed by The Express): “I still can’t see anyone else winning the league besides Liverpool or Manchester City. I now think on the back of van Dijk, Man City are favourites.

“They needed the top two to drop. City dropped last season to 82, are Liverpool going to drop this season to the 80s?

“That’s where the gap is bridged then and then can these teams make a much stronger challenge? I still can’t see one of those sides winning the league but I think we’re going to have a great title race.”
