Liverpool midfielder says players don’t pay attention to Spurs’ results

Georginio Wijnaldum has said that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does not allow the players to be distracted by Tottenham’s and Manchester City’s results and makes sure they are fully focussed on their games at hand.

Liverpool are top of the table at the halfway point of the season, six points ahead of second-placed Spurs. Starting this Saturday when they take on Arsenal, the Reds are entering a phase where they have some tricky fixtures including trips to Etihad and Old Trafford.

Tottenham will hope to make the most of any potential Liverpool slip up as they have a comparatively easier spell of fixtures coming up. However, Wijnaldum insists that the Liverpool players have no idea who Spurs are playing and are solely focused on winning their games.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Liverpool midfielder said, “When we played Wolves away (the Friday before Christmas) a lot of the players didn’t even know who City or Tottenham were playing.”

“We were just focused on our own game and trying to get the most out of that one. That is why it goes so well. We are only focused on the things we can control. We can control our own performance. We are only busy with that.”

“If you are maybe less focused than normal, then you have a manager in Jurgen who will tell you directly that there is no space for doing less or enjoying things too much. He says keep both feet on the ground.”

While the title race is far from over just yet, If Liverpool do manage to come out of the next 8 fixtures with their 6 point lead at the top of the table intact, it will be their title to lose.
