Liverpool receive injury boost ahead of trip to Tottenham

Liverpool have been handed an injury boost ahead of their trip to Tottenham on Thursday, with The Athletic’s James Pearce revealing that Joel Matip is expected to be fit for the clash.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been on a poor run of form recently and a loss against Tottenham on Thursday will see them slip outside of the top four in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho’s men still have a game in hand over many teams including the Merseysiders and a win on Thursday could bring Spurs right back into the title race conversation.

Liverpool have had to deal with more than their fair share of injuries at the back this season and have had often fielded makeshift backlines including the likes of Jordan Henderson.

Although Matip played in the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Burnley last week, the central defender was not involved in their 3-2 loss against Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

However, Pearce has now confirmed the Cameroonian was rested for the clash at Old Trafford and is expected to make the trip to North London.

The journalist said: “Understand Joel Matip rested with one eye on the trip to Spurs, not injured again.

“Having just come back from injury it would have been a big ask for him to play three times in the space of a week.”

Liverpool’s main issue over the last month has been the lack of goals. Klopp’s men have not been particularly bad defensively. However, having Matip available will still be a huge boost to them as it means they can afford to play the likes of Henderson in midfield instead of asking him to fill in at the back.
