Lloris opens on up importance of Champions League football for Spurs stars

Despite the improvement that Tottenham have shown over recent weeks, Hugo Lloris has insisted the team still has a long way to go.

Tottenham looked down and out of the race for the top-four when they fell to a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford a month ago.

However, four wins in four since then, allied with their rivals dropping points, has meant that Antonio Conte’s men now sit three points clear in fourth place.

Spurs are now seen by many as the favourites to beat Arsenal and Manchester United to Champions League qualification, given the momentum they are building and their comparatively easier fixture list.

However, Lloris has now called on his teammates to remain focused and take it one game at a time.

The 35-year-old told Football.London: “I believe there’s very good potential and with confidence, you can grow ever faster, but again, in football, from one game to another, everything can turn very quickly.

“That’s why we need to be cautious. We know where we come from and we cannot forget that. That’s very important, especially in this season. We need to continue our work, our way.”

Lloris is one of several Spurs players who has plenty of experience in the Champions League and the goalkeeper admitted that he and his teammates are desperate to get back into the competition.

When asked what being back in the Champions League will mean for the club, the Frenchman said: “Not only for the club, for the players. It’s the competition that everyone wants to be involved in.

“But also we’re in the Premier League and to get the ticket to the Champions League is very tough, probably more difficult than in other leagues, but that’s the game.

“There’s still a long way to go. Even if we came back and we’re in the race, there are still seven games to play.”

The one main advantage that we have over Arsenal in the race for fourth, is the fact that the likes of Lloris, Dier, Kane, Son and Davies have plenty of experience of finishing in the top four, and know what it takes.

In contrast, not only is Arsenal’s squad very young but even their experienced players like Xhaka and Lacazette do not have much experience qualifying for the Champions League since arriving in England.
