Lloris raves about 22-year-old’s performance against Man City

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has raved about Steven Bergwijn’s goal in his debut for the club and suggested that he is on his way to becoming a fan favourite among the Spurs faithful.

Bergwijn came in with a big reputation from the Eredivisie after a couple of outstanding seasons with PSV Eindhoven.

Some Spurs fans were surprised to see Jose Mourinho throw him straight into the team against Manchester City. However, the Dutchman held his own in what was a difficult game where he saw little of the ball and had to work his socks off.

When the moment arrived midway into the second half, Bergwijn took his chance beautifully with a chest and volley that gave Ederson no chance.

Lloris was complimentary of the way the winger coped after being thrown straight into the deep end.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Frenchman said: “What a goal! What a start!” beamed skipper Hugo Lloris, who played a decisive part in the win with a crucial save from Sergio Aguero and then denying Ilkay Gundogan from the penalty spot in the first half.

“It’s not easy to come from a different league into the Premier League in terms of intensity, and to start against Manchester City… he did well, and he was decisive.

“It’s going to help him to get into the team, to get into the Club, even the relationship with the fans here is going to be even greater in the future. But he couldn’t start in a better way.”

While the goal was obviously taken quite brilliantly by Bergwijn, what I was most impressed about what the intensity and the physicality he showed. There were certainly signs that he is capable of quickly fitting into the Premier League. Let’s hope he builds on that performance and goes from strength to strength.
