‘Looking frightening’ – West Ham player tips Spurs to ‘surprise people’ this season

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has predicted that rivals Tottenham Hotspur could be set to cause a surprise this season.

Tottenham’s fortunes transformed following the appointment of Antonio Conte in November, with the Italian having replaced Nuno Espirito Santo with the club languishing in ninth place in the Premier League table, with the majority of fans becoming disenchanted with the style of play adopted by the Portuguese.

Having brought in Dejan Kulusevki and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in January, Conte guided the north Londoners to fourth place and a return to Champions League football at the expense of Arsenal.

Antonio has praised the business which Spurs have done in the transfer market and have since added the likes of Ivan Perisic and Richarlison to their ranks.

The 32-year-old described Tottenham’s attacking options as ‘frightening’ given the abundance of talent they have going forward, which allows for plenty of cover should any player dip below their usual high standards.

Antonio told the Footballer’s Football Podcast: “Spurs, the signings they’ve made with Conte, they’re solid, that’s what he does with his teams they’re solid teams. He knows his shape, he knows how he plays, he has his routine. It’s more the signings and the players going forward.

“If Kane dips they have Son, if Son dips they have Kane and Richarlison, Kulusevski on the right. Going forward they’re looking frightening. I feel like they’re going to surprise people, especially off the end of last season where they picked up so well under Conte.”

Given the rivalry between the two sides, especially on the Hammers’ side, credit has to be given to Michail Antonio who always offers an honest verdict on matters involving Tottenham.

Antonio is right to recognise the fact that Spurs have recruited well during the summer window to add more quality to Antonio Conte’s ranks, and it is reassuring for once that we have a quality forward in Richarlison who can cover for Harry Kane, should the England captain encounter any injury issues.
