‘Lot of years’ – Cristian Romero hopes he will be at Spurs for ‘a long time’

Cristian Romero had claimed that Tottenham can ‘achieve big things’ given the trajectory the club are on under Antonio Conte and his coaching staff, and the centre-back hopes to remain a Lilywhite for many years to come.

Just a little over 12 months on from arriving from Atalanta, Romero has established himself as a mainstay in Spurs’ backline.

The centre-back previously played in the middle of a back three under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta and he has admitted that he needed time to adapt to playing on the right side in Conte’s system.

The 24-year-old expressed his desire to continue picking the Italian’s brain and improving as a player.

Romero told Sky Sports about Conte: “He is a manager who has helped me a lot tactically. The career he has had shows how good he is and I think we are on a good path. Every day I wake up with a desire to keep learning.

“It’s very different (his current position). My favourite position is in the middle because that’s where I have always played, but I am playing on the right for the national team too now and I will happily play wherever I am asked to, so I don’t have a problem with it.

“At the beginning, it was difficult, for sure, but I got used to it and I learned the role. I have to keep learning and keep correcting many things, but I’m good and I feel comfortable there.”

Romero also expressed his intention to be at Tottenham for a long-time and remarked that the club is moving in the right direction.

He said: “There are a lot of years ahead if the club wants it and if all goes well. I hope things will continue in this way and that I will be here for a long time.

“Things have gone well. Last season, we achieved our goal of qualifying for the Champions League and we were very happy.”

The centre-back was hesitant to spell out Tottenham’s ambitions for the season but he insisted that he and his teammates are capable of achieving big things, given the path they are now on.

When asked if he see Spurs as contenders for major honours, the Argentine responded: “Talking is easy. But we have to show it on the pitch. We have a good group of players to win trophies. We only have to convince ourselves.

“It is early in the season. We are still a long way from that. We just have to go step by step, improving the things we need to improve. But I think we are on a good path.

“We have to trust that if we continue like this, with the work we have done and the work we are doing, we can achieve big things.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Almost all the Spurs players have given, more or less, the same answer when asked about the team’s aspirations for the season. I do not think that is a coincidence. I suspect Conte has asked the players to do their talking on the pitch and not put a limit on what they can achieve this season.
