‘Love playing there’ – Spurs star admits he is enjoying change of position under Conte

Ben Davies has admitted he is really enjoying playing as a left central defender in a back three under Antonio Conte at Spurs.

Although Davies has made more than 250 appearances for Tottenham (Transfermarkt) since arriving from Swansea in the summer of 2014, he has not been a regular in the starting eleven for much of that time.

The Welshman has served as cover at left-back for Danny Rose and later Sergio Reguilon but he has become an integral part of the backline since Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo in November.

Reports indicate that the Spurs head coach is prioritising signing a left-side centre-back this summer to compete with Davies (The Athletic) but the 28-year-old admitted he wants to use every opportunity he gets this season to show what he can do in that role.

The former Swansea man admitted it is a position that he has become used to playing over the years within the Welsh set-up.

Davies told Sky Sports: “I’ve been given the opportunity to play in a new position under the new manager and I love playing there.

“I’m making sure I’m doing everything possible to make sure I’m ready for every game.

“I’ve played there quite a bit for the national team in the past and I’ve always enjoyed playing there.

“When the opportunity came to play there, I’ve relished it and really enjoyed playing there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think many people are unfairly assuming that the left centre-back role would be one of the easiest to upgrade on for Spurs this summer. In reality, Davies is perfectly suited to the role and I do not think too many players would be able to do better than Welshman in that position.

If Spurs fans did not have any preconceived notions about Davies’ quality and if he had been a new signing who arrived this season, fans would be raving about how good his performances have been under Conte.

While there is no doubt that the 28-year-old needs competition for his place in the side, I would back the Welshman to remain as Conte’s first choice next season irrespective of who we sign this summer.
