‘Lovely guy’ – Van de Ven explains why he loves playing under Postecoglou at Spurs

Micky van de Ven has admitted that he and his Tottenham teammates are relishing playing for Ange Postecoglou as the Australian is very straightforward in what he expects from the players.

Postecoglou has had a great start to life at Spurs and the scenes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the full-time whistle against Manchester United were evidence that the Australian has already got the fans onside.

While the supporters are evidently overjoyed to see the side playing on the front foot, the 57-year-old’s interviews have also arguably played a big part in winning them over.

Based on Van de Ven’s words, it sounds like the players are also enjoying the fact that Postecoglou is a straight shooter, with the Dutchman adding that there is a real family feel about the squad already.

Micky Van de Ven is impressed by Postecoglou

When asked about the Tottenham head coach, the centre-back told talkSPORT: “He’s a lovely guy. He is so good for all of us, he’s quiet, but he’s straight in with what he wants.

“He is clear, everything is clear for everyone in the dressing room and everyone in the team knows what he has to do and what he is expecting from us.

“He’s a sweet guy – a lovely guy – but he’s straight and he knows what he wants to be and what he expects from us in his way of playing.

“He has a good vibe with everyone, he has a good relationship with everyone and I think all of the team loves him and we feel like one family and I think that’s really important.”

Even though the Tottenham job is undoubtedly the biggest challenge Postecoglou has had in his career, success has followed the Aussie coach wherever he has been.

When asked if he can replicate his Celtic success at Spurs, Van de Ven remarked: “That’s a possibility.

“I think how we play now, every player in the team loves the way of playing under him, the way he thinks about football. We feel each other and we know what he wants and we know what he expects from us.

“So we do what he wants, and I think he also looks at how we think about it, so it’s not only from one way, but from both ways, and I think that will help the team and the manager also to develop everyone.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While there have been a lot of promising signs in the first couple of games, it is still early days and it is important for the Spurs fan base not to get carried away.

There is no doubt that Posteocglou will have a steep learning curve in his first six months in the Premier League and given the way we play, we are guaranteed to be on the receiving end of some bad score lines over the coming months.

For the team to come through the inevitable difficult spells, the fans must not turn on the new regime at the first sign of trouble.
