Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes are firmly on the radar of the Lilywhites, with both midfielders likely to command significant fees.
Tonali is valued at more than the £80 million bid Spurs lodged a few days ago, while Fernandes is worth around £80-90 million.

Bergvall is not short of admirers, with Chelsea and Aston Villa having shown interest in the winter window before Spurs managed to retain the youngster.
According to The Athletic, he now has further suitors, with both Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa keen on signing him this summer.
Forest is understood to have identified Bergvall as a potential replacement for Elliot Andersen, who is attracting interest from Manchester City.
Villa’s interest is noted, although it is explained that they are not actively pursuing a midfielder unless a sale is made.
Bergvall’s preference, however, is to move on from Tottenham, which has alerted several clubs ahead of the transfer window.
Bergvall’s lack of minutes under Roberto De Zerbi
It is not surprising to see the young midfielder considering his future this summer. Since Roberto De Zerbi took charge of Tottenham, there has been a clear emphasis on experience rather than youth.
Bergvall managed just one start, which came in the Italian’s first game against Sunderland, and from then on, minutes were limited.
Last season, he featured for only 967 minutes in the Premier League, with injuries also keeping him sidelined for an extended period.
