Lukas Podolski says Spurs star would have been the ideal signing for Arsenal

Former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski has said that it would have been ideal for the Gunners to secure the services of Harry Kane last summer as they are in need of a top-class number nine.

Kane had just a year left on his contract at Tottenham last summer and rather than risk allowing him to run it down and leave the club on a free transfer, the Lilywhites made the decision to sell their talisman to Bayern Munich.

All things considered, Spurs have coped relatively well with the absence of their record goalscorer, with several of their attacking stars stepping up to the plate and sharing the goals around this season.

However, one can argue that Tottenham still have not replaced the England captain and some reports have indicated that one of their objectives this summer is to sign a marquee centre-forward to fill the void left by the 30-year-old’s departure (Football Insider).

Podolski wanted Arsenal to sign Harry Kane from Spurs

Podolski pointed out that the one area that Arsenal are lacking in is at the top end of the pitch but he admitted that he understood why a move for Kane was not possible for Mikel Arteta’s men, given the rivalry between the two North London sides.

Speaking about his former side, the German told The Daily Mail: “They’ve made a huge step forward, but at the moment they are playing with Kai Havertz up front. They brought in Declan Rice but if they really want to compete next year they need a No 9, a target striker who scores goals.”

“Harry Kane was the one who wanted to change, but with his history of Tottenham, of course, it is not possible to move to Arsenal. That is why he moved to Bayern Munich. It was a good move for Bayern Munich and him. He was the only option on the market.”

Podolski also appeared to mock the fact that Kane has had another trophyless season with his club despite scoring a bucketload of goals.

He added: “Kane is scoring goals but I see the story already when Bayern Munich are third in the Bundesliga and out of the Champions League. Maybe we have another good story like Tottenham – move to Bayern and don’t win anything!”

While one would expect opposition fans to mock Kane’s lack of silverware, given the tribalism in the game, for a fellow professional to do it is rather embarrassing, given all that the former Tottenham star has achieved in the game.
