‘Madness’ – Darren Bent rejects suggestion that Spurs should sell player

Darren Bent has claimed it would be ‘absolute madness’ for Tottenham to consider selling Son Heung-min in the summer.

When Son won the Premier League Golden Boot last season, not many would have thought that his place in the club’s starting eleven would come under scrutiny just one year later.

However, the 30-year-old has struggled to hit his usual heights since the start of the season, having scored just four goals in 21 Premier League matches and two in seven Champions League games so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).

Conte is continuing to show faith in the South Korean, who has remained a fixture in the starting eleven, with the Spurs head coach repeatedly insisting over recent months that he has zero doubts about the forward (Football.London).

However, with the likes of Arnaut Danjuma and Richarlison waiting in the wings, some Spurs fans will feel that it is time for the Italian to leave Son out of the side.

After the former Bayer Leverkusen man delivered another lacklustre display against AC Milan on Tuesday, Bent was asked if Tottenham should consider selling Son in the summer, to which he responded on talkSPORT “Absolute madness. When did he get here? He got here in 2015.

“The only players to have scored more Premier League goals in that period since 2015: Harry Kane, who’s got the most; Salah, Vardy, Aguero and Sadio Mane. They are the only players above Son.”

It is all fine quoting stats from previous years but all players go through a decline at the latter stages of their careers, with some going through it rapidly (like Eden Hazard) and others more gradually.

However, having said that, I do not think Tottenham should consider selling Son in the summer. A new manager who plays on the front foot could help the South Korean rediscover his best form.
