‘Maintain our levels’ – Postecoglou expresses his disappointment at West Ham draw

Tottenham Hotspur played out an intense 1-1 draw with London rivals West Ham tonight, and in his post-match press conference, Ange Postecoglou admitted he was disappointed not to win a very tough game.

Spurs came out all guns blazing at the London Stadium tonight, with Brennan Johnson converting from a Timo Werner cross after just five minutes.

Unfortunately, the Lilywhites could not hold out and Kurt Zouma scored from a corner just before the 20-minute mark.

An end-to-end second half saw both sides have a number of chances, and Ange Postecoglou‘s side dominated possession for large portions of the game, but neither could find the winning goal.

Postecoglou disappointed not to beat West Ham

Speaking to the press after the match (via BBC Sport), Postecoglou discussed the way his side handled the challenge before them tonight and expressed his pleasure at the goal his team scored.

On the game overall, he said: “Yeah it was [tough physically] and it’s what you expect when you come here. They are a strong team and they sit compact so you have to be patient. I thought we handled it OK. Disappointed not to get a better outcome but a tough game.”

Discussing Johnson’s goal, Postecoglou added: “It was a well-worked move. We have been working on that. A couple of other times we just weren’t in the right areas.”

And, on what this means for the rest of the season, he said: “There’s a lot of games to go still. I will be very surprised if all games aren’t tight. Everyone is fighting for something. We have to maintain our levels.”

It’s a frustrating one tonight, as we dominated the game, and had lots of opportunities but just lacked the conviction to put the game to bed. Still, the performance was promising, and we just need to find that killer instinct again.
