‘Make him understand’ – Club legend fears exit of ‘irreplaceable’ Spurs target

Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi has urged the Serie A giants to do everything in their power to hang on to rumoured Tottenham target Marcelo Brozovic.

Brozovic current contract runs out at the end of the season and reports have indicated that Antonio Conte wants to reunite with the midfielder at Tottenham.

Reports from Italy claimed until last week that Inter had not been able to meet the Croat’s wage demands and that negotiations between the parties had stalled.

However, there seems to have been some progress in talks between the parties this week, with Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta confidently asserting that the midfielder will commit his future to the club.

This was backed up by Fabrizio Romano who revealed a few days ago that the Nerrazuri are making progress in talks with Brozovic’s representatives.

Bergomi has now said that Inter will not be able to replace the 29-year-old if he leaves.

The 1982 World Cup winner told Tuttosport: “He (Brozovic) is irreplaceable in (Simone) Inzaghi’s eleven. You don’t have another Brozovic, another player who can do that kind of work.

“And in Europe, how many are there of Brozovic? If you have to make an effort (to keep one player), I would do it with him.

“You have to make him understand that he is in a great team, with a great project and that he can become a flagbearer. It cannot always be just a question of money, the sense of belonging also counts.

“You have to feel the shirt, identify yourself with an important club like Inter, in its history. Brozo must understand this.”

At the moment, all signs seem to indicate that Brozovic will put pen to paper on a new contract with Inter. I will not be disappointed if that happens as I do not believe a player of the Croat’s profile should be a priority for Spurs in January. I would much rather see us move Dele Alli on and replace him with Kessie in January.
