Man City beat Spurs in race for long-term transfer target claims report

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have accepted defeat in the race for Ajax’s Frenkie De Jong.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Manchester City are said to have beaten the likes of Spurs and Barcelona to land the highly-rated defensive midfielder.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham on a regular basis since the summer transfer window, however, it appears that he will be on his way to Pep Guardiola’s side in a £61 million deal.

Tottenham’s current transfer record stands at £42million (Guardian) for securing the services of Davinson Sanchez, also from Ajax just over a year ago.

A recent report in Mundo Deportivo had claimed that Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen had recommended the Ajax pair of De Jong and Matthijs de Ligt to Mauricio Pochettino as potential additions to his squad.

Eriksen is himself a former Ajax player, having played for the Dutch side between 2010-2013 before making the switch to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham fans will be hoping that Daniel Levy finally decides to back Pochettino in the upcoming January transfer window after failing to sign any new players during the summer.
