Manchester City midfielder Rodri believes the addition of Tottenham striker Harry Kane would have helped Pep Guardiola’s side a lot, but hailed the quality of the current squad.

City have been in the transfer market for a new striker following Sergio Aguero’s departure for Barcelona, and targeted England captain Kane as their go-to man this summer.

The 28-year-old expressed his desire to switch north London for Manchester this summer, but a move failed to materiakise, with City failing to meet the demands of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

That has subsequently brought an end to this transfer saga, for now at least, which caused Kane to accept the situation and confirm his stay in N17 this summer.

But despite the failed signing, City and Spain midfielder Rodri claimd a player of Kane’s quality would have been very useful for Guardiola’s side, as they look to retain their Premier League crown this season.

In an interview with Spanish publication El Pais, Rodri said: “A player of [Harry] Kane’s stature helps a lot, but we have a team that has been able to win the Premiership, which is almost like an internal Champions League, and you don’t have to change much.

“The most valuable thing is the goal because there are very few players who can score more than 20 goals, but that doesn’t guarantee anything either.”

The Spaniard, though, played down any worry that City may have regarding a striker of similar quality to Kane, and has hailed his compatriot Ferran Torres for his strong start to the season.

He added: “We have other players like Ferran, for example, to play there. As a midfielder, I like to see him there because he creates a lot of space for you, and he doesn’t just come in to face you. In addition, a finishing touch and a goalscoring ability.”

Unfortunately for City, a player of Kane’s quality will be worth more to Spurs than them. They have such significant resources, though, they can bring in an abundance of talent that can chip in to score goals too. They currently have one of the best squads in the world, so they shouldn’t have to worry too much.
