Man City set to be without first-team regular for Carabao Cup final

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, with John Stones set to miss the game after being sent off against Aston Villa.

Spurs came from behind to get a morale-boosting win against Southampton last night in Ryan Mason’s first game in charge.

The win was not only crucial for the North Londoners to keep their chances of a top-four finish alive but it also ensured that they head into Sunday’s final high on confidence.

Spurs go into the final as massive underdogs, particularly given the fact that Harry Kane is a doubt for the game.

However, City also will have a key player missing in Stones, who was sent off in the final minute of the first half against Aston Villa following a rash challenge on Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

Stones has formed a formidable partnership with Ruben Dias at the back for Pep Guardiola’s men this season and the centre-back’s absence could give Spurs a chance to capitalise.

On the face of it, missing Stones does not seem like a big blow to City since they have a quality centre-back in Aymeric Laporte to fill in for the England international. However, much of City’s success this season has been built on the back of the Stones and Dias partnership and they could be more defensively susceptible on Sunday than they have been so far this campaign.
