Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel does not think that Tottenham Hotspur are likely to challenge the Red Devils for a top-four finish despite Antonio Conte’s men pulling off a win over Manchester City on Saturday.

Tottenham’s chances of making up the ground on their rivals for a fourth-place finish took a massive blow when they fell to two back-to-back defeats at home against Southampton and Wolves.

However, the win over City on Sunday has brought the Lilywhites right back into the equation, with Spurs now sitting seven points behind Man Utd in fourth with three games in hand over Ralf Rangnick’s men.

Winning away at the Premier League champions could also do wonders to the Tottenham stars’ confidence after the blow of two successive home defeats.

However, Schmeichel has now suggested that Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal are Man Utd’s biggest competitors in the race for Champions League qualification. Both Tottenham and West Ham were completely snubbed from the conversation.

The United legend told BBC 5 Live Breakfast (as relayed by The Daily Express): “I think Arsenal have shown some great form.

“But actually, on current form in the last five games, Man United are a little bit better than Arsenal.

“It’s hard to see but they are. I think having the points on the board rather than games in hand [is more important].”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have to say that I have been surprised by how consistent Arsenal have been over recent weeks. So, they cannot be ruled out of the race for fourth. However, I do think that their lack of firepower up front could cost them at the business end of the season.

United also have some extremely talented players and seem to be clicking into gear under Rangnick. It looks like the race for the fourth spot could well go down to the wire this season.
