Man United legend urges club to go for other players over Tottenham’s Alderweireld

Tottenham Hotspur will have to fight tooth and nail to keep their star defender Toby Alderweireld for next season.

The Belgian central defender had his contract extended by an extra year this season, but this triggered a release clause in his deal.

The defender will now become available for just £25m should a big come in during a particular period in the summer.

Spurs must now hope that Alderweireld either wants to see out his contract, or even has plans to sign a new one, although the latter seems unlikely.

Tottenham are sure to receive at least a bid or two for the centre back, as bargains like this don’t come around often in the Prem.

Despite Toby’s quality, Man United legend Nemanja Vidic believes his old club should instead focus on brining in quality new midfielders.

The old Red Devils centre back claims he would love to see Alderweireld in a United shirt, but insists the club already has decent defenders.

He said (Stadium Astro – as quote by the Express): “Of course, I would like to see him there. But I think the club has to have a priority.

“What I see is, if you want to be in the Champions League next season and challenge for the Premier League, you have to strengthen the midfield. You need that depth in the midfield area.

“In defence they already have five players, so they can rotate, and it seems like they’re doing well.”
