Man United turned down chance to sign Spurs star for £30m

According to Phil Brown, host of the Beyond the Pitch podcast, Man United turned down the chance to sign Spurs man Toby Alderweireld in the summer (as reported by TeamTalk).

Apparently Tottenham were keen to offload the defender for just £30m, but United knocked them back.

They then vowed to return next summer to get Toby for £25m or even on a free.

Spurs have the option of extending the Belgian’s contract by a year, but that would make him available for just £25m in the summer.

It’s fair to say that plenty of clubs will be lining up to sign him com that time.

Although, this report that Spurs offered him out for £30m last summer seems strange, as that would be giving up a season’s worth of services for the sake of £5m. It wouldn’t make sense.

Hopefully Spurs can tie him down to a last minute bumper new deal, perhaps after winning a trophy this season.
