Man Utd legend says Spurs fans ‘won’t like him’ after making Conte claim

Paul Scholes has claimed Tottenham fans will not like him after suggesting that Manchester United could still tempt Antonio Conte to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with Conte earlier this season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job hanging by a thread, but ultimately persisted with the Norwegian coach.

Tottenham, meanwhile, swooped in to secure the signature of the former Inter Milan boss after dismissing Nuno Espirito Santo after just five months in charge.

United later parted company with Solskjaer but did so too late to appoint Conte, and hired Ralf Rangnick as interim manager instead.

Conte has lifted spirits around North London since his appointment and has put Spurs within touching distance of the Premier League top four, while United have remained somewhat unconvincing under their German coach.

However, Conte has often reiterated the need to improve the squad at his disposal which has been magnified in recent weeks since the opening of the January transfer window.

As such, ex-United midfielder Scholes believes the 52-year-old is already getting frustrated with what is available to him at Spurs and feels his former club could still lure him to Manchester.

He told the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel: “You think of Antonio Conte. The timing looked ideal, some say he’s not suited to Man United, but you see what he’s done at Tottenham with the squad that is nowhere near as good as United’s squad.

“They will probably challenge for top four and I think United missed a trick with him.

“Conte at Tottenham and [Mauricio] Pochettino, those are the managers we want. Conte, he’s up there with [Pep] Guardiola, he’s up there with [Thomas] Tuchel and he’s up there with [Jurgen] Klopp.

“I still think United could get him from Tottenham. Tottenham fans won’t like me for saying that, but you can see that he’s already getting frustrated with his squad of players, he’s asking for other things. I think he could do something special here Conte.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This opinion has been formed very quickly from Scholes as Conte hasn’t completed a transfer window at Spurs yet. He has said that the squad needs to be worked on, but he needs time to do that and ultimately the backing from the club.
