Man Utd player reveals Spurs midfielder texted him to see if he was North London bound

Donny van de Beek has revealed that his Dutch team-mate Steven Bergwijn texted him to see if he was joining Tottenham Hotspur.

The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham with the North Londoners said to have made a last ditch attempt to persuade him to swap Amsterdam with North London (The Mirror).

Instead, Manchester United pushed ahead after being alerted of Tottenham’s intentions with United’s chief negotiator Matt Judge wrapping up a deal to take the Ajax man to Old Trafford.

Van de Beek, who is currently on international duty along with Bergwijn admitted that the Spurs man had asked if he was to become his team-mate at club level but instead told him that he was on his way to the former Premier League champions.

Bergwijn was on target when he scored the only goal of the game in Holland’s 1-0 win against Poland in the UEFA Nations League on Friday evening.

Van de Beek told Destentor: “This was really the time to go. That’s why I was only on the phone with my manager last weekend. In the end there was an agreement. Steven Bergwijn texted me whether I would still play at the Spurs. But I chose United.”
