Anthony Martial is enjoying a positive season so far in a Manchester United shirt, scoring nine goals and assisting another three in just 18 games for the Red Devils (TransferMarkt).
During his first season for United, Martial finished as the club’s top goalscorer, netting 18 times and setting up another 11 over 56 games for the Red Devils (TransferMarkt).
However, from 2016 onwards, under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho, Martial never reached that goal tally again, and never played 56 games in a season for his club.
The Frenchman even lost his number 9 shirt when Mourinho decided to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester.
Martial’s wife has now claimed that Mourinho’s treatment of her husband put a strain on her, as the winger often suffers in silence and retreats into himself.
She went as far as to say that she would avoid going to events because she did not want to meet Mourinho, as it was not her place to say anything to him.
She said (L’Equipe as reported by the Express): “During our first two years together in Manchester, I experienced a very difficult period because Jose Mourinho did not play him (between 2016 and 2018).

“In these cases, Anthony shuts himself out.
“You know he’s suffering, but he doesn’t say it.
“I felt trapped in my sense of injustice because, as a wife, you can’t say anything (to the coach).
“We’re just watching our man go down. I was experiencing it so badly that I didn’t go to certain events so as not to meet the coach.”
