Manager admits it is a ‘privilege’ to work with ‘unbelievable’ Tottenham loanee

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has admitted that it is a privilege to work with on-loan Tottenham man Dane Scarlett, and lavished praise on the youngster for his attitude.

Scarlett did not have the start he would have hoped for to his loan spell at Portsmouth as he failed to find the back of the net in his first seven appearances for the club.

However, the youngster has been on fire over recent weeks, having netted four times in his last four matches across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The 18-year-old will hope to build on his recent form and fire Pompey to the Championship, with the south coast club currently sitting behind league leaders Ipswich Town only on goal difference.

The England Under-19 international is certainly thought of highly at Spurs, with Antonio Conte describing him as “the best prospect from the academy” last season (Football.London).

Cowley has now revealed that it is not just Scarlett’s ability that stands out but also the youngster’s work ethic and his determination to improve.

The Portsmouth boss told Sky Sports: “Dane is a fantastic young player. He has an unbelievable level of competence and as a consequence, has a real confidence in himself, and rightly so.

“I always think, with young players, however talented they are, they must make sure their work ethic matches their talent. Then if they can do that, they will achieve the potential that their talent deserves.

“Dane has to work exceptionally hard as a consequence of where his talent is at. But the fact that he loves the game and has such a desire to want to improve on a daily basis is great to see.

“It’s a privilege for Nicky and I to wake up every morning and work with a player of his quality.”

We have seen time and again that ability alone is not enough for young players to fulfil their potential.

They need to have the right attitude to maximise their talent, and based on Cowley’s assessment, it appears like Scarlett has his head screwed on, and is determined to become the best player he can be.
