Manager lavishes praise on ‘complete’ Tottenham star ahead of World Cup

Experienced Argentinean manager Gustavo Coleoni has heaped praise on Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero, who has been in terrific form for both club and country over the last two and a half years.

The 24-year-old was extremely impressive in his first season in the Premier League after making the switch from Atalanta in 2021 and it did not come as much of a surprise when Spurs triggered the £46.5m option to buy the defender permanently this summer.

Although Romero has failed to live up to his high standards at times this season, his absence has been felt by Antonio Conte’s men when he has been out injured.

The centre-back is crucial to Argentina’s hopes of progressing to the later stages of the World Cup in Qatar, and Coleoni has now spoken in glowing terms about the Tottenham man, remarking that it is his natural competitiveness and aggression that make him the player he is.

The former Central Cordoba manager described Romero as a “very complete centre-back” and added to Canal Show Sport (11/11/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) about the former Juve man: “He invites the challenges, goes for the tackle, he goes looking for it. That’s why he’s playing at a world level.”

Argentina’s backline certainly looks formidable with Romero partnering Lisandro Martinez at the back. However, both players are very aggressive and look to win the ball early.  One of them would perhaps have to adapt their game slightly and show more composure if they are paired together in a back four.
