Manager makes confident prediction about Tottenham’s ‘unplayable’ Dane Scarlett

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley lavished praise on Dane Scarlett for his performance against Newport County on Tuesday and confidently asserted that the on-loan Tottenham man will score plenty of goals for the club this season.

Pompey fell to a 3-2 defeat to Newport in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday with Scarlett starting the game and getting 63 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Michael Jacobs.

That was the 18-year-old’s seventh appearance for the League One club since his loan move in the summer and although the teenager is yet to find the back of the net, he has put in some impressive displays.

The Spurs academy starlet registered his first assist for Portsmouth in their 3-1 home victory against Bristol Rovers on Saturday by delivering a perfect cross for Owen Dale to head home in stoppage time.

Cowley labelled Scarlett’s performance against Newport as ‘unplayable’ and suggested that the floodgates will open for the striker as soon as he gets his first goal for the club.

He told Portsmouth’s official website: “I thought Dane Scarlett was the unplayable first half. I think he is only one goal away from scoring an awful lot of goals at this level.”

It is pleasing to see that Scarlett’s new teammates, coaches and the Portsmouth fans have really taken to the youngster even though he has not hit the back of the net yet. The experience of playing senior football at this age will do the teenager a world of good.
