Manager not concerned by transfer talk over player linked with Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be one of the clubs interested in signing young Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry (TEAMtalk).

The central defender who came through the ranks at the Boro academy has reportedly caught the attention of several Premier League clubs including Everton, Wolves and Manchester City with the Championship outfit said to be fearful of losing him in January.

The 22-year-old is relatively experienced for his age having made his debut for Middlesbrough at the age of 17 and has represented England at under-17, under-18, under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels.

Former Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate, who is currently the manager at Boro has spoken out about the reports surrounding the player’s future on Teesside.

While the former England international admitted that Fry will eventually look to play in the Premier League, he insisted that it was all speculation at the moment.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Woodgate said about the speculation: “That’s an ambition for Dael. You read a lot of speculation linking a lot of players with a lot of clubs.

“That’s what it is at this minute – it’s speculation. Let’s wait until January to see what happens.”

That statement from Woodgate does sound like the youngster could be leaving in January. However, I really can’t see Spurs signing another defender in January given the options they have at the position but with Alderweireld and Vertonghen now on the wrong side of thirty, perhaps a move next summer is on the cars.
