Manager provides update on future of player allegedly offered to Tottenham

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that rumoured Tottenham target Marco Asensio is in talks with Real Madrid over a new contract.

It was reported ahead of the January window that Ascensio was a target for Tottenham, with Madrid allegedly valuing him at around £43m (Daily Express).

The winger ended up staying put at the Santiago Bernabeu but there continues to be uncertainty over his long-term future, with his current contract at Madrid running only until 2023 (Transfermarkt).

Marca claimed last month that while the Spain international’s priority is to remain at the Spanish capital, it was unclear whether Los Blancos would be able to tie him down to a new deal.

The print edition of the Sunday Mirror (10/04/22, p.73) subsequently stated that Spurs had been offered the chance to sign the wide-man this summer.

However, Ancelotti has now insisted that he sees Asensio as an important part of his plans and added that talks are ongoing regarding a new deal for the winger.

The Italian told AS about Asensio: “He’s a player with extraordinary quality. He had a serious knee injury which left him out for a long time and with a slow rehabilitation.

“He’s an important player who has helped us. I don’t know what will happen regarding his future.

“I think he is talking to the club to renew his contract, but I can only speak about his technical qualities”.

The speculation over Asencio’s future might have been fed to the press by the player’s agent to strengthen their position during contract negotiations.

If Spurs do hold an interest in the 26-year-old, I would not be surprised if Conte is looking at the wide-man as an option for left wing-back.
