Manager reveals star Spurs are allegedly frontrunners to sign will ‘likely’ leave this summer

West Brom boss Steve Bruce has admitted that Tottenham target Sam Johnstone is likely to leave the club at the end of the season.

Hugo Lloris is expected to remain as Tottenham’s number one next season after the Frenchman signed a two-year contract extension with Spurs in January.

However, the North London club might be on the lookout for another goalkeeper this summer as they are not expected to take the option to sign Pierluigi Gollini permanently (Goal).

Johnstone is one of the options Spurs are eyeing as a backup to the Frenchman (Daily Mail), with some sources claiming the North London club are the front runners to snap up the Baggies number one, whose contract runs out this summer (Alasdair Gold).

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett stated this week that Johnstone has decided against renewing his contract with the Championship club as the goalkeeper wishes to play in the Premier League.

Dorsett added that Tottenham were going head-to-head with Manchester United for the England international’s signature.

Bruce has now confirmed that Johnstone is not likely to be a West Brom player next season.

The former Newcastle boss told Birmingham Mail about the goalkeeper: “The likelihood is that Sam is going to leave.”

If Johnstone is content with being an understudy to Hugo, then the signing would be a no-brainer for Spurs, given that he is available for free. However, I do wonder if the 29-year-old would prefer to join a club where he is guaranteed to be the number one to give himself the best chance of making the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
