Vincent Kompany’s father has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur were one of many big clubs that had previously come knocking for his son in their managerial search.

Kompany replaced Thomas Tuchel at the helm of Bayern Munich recently, with the move perhaps coming as a surprise to many.

Although the Belgian did a great job in helping Burnley win promotion to the Premier League, he had been unable to keep the Clarets in the top flight, which is why many have questioned Bayern’s decision to appoint him.

The 38-year-old will now get a chance to work with the likes of Harry Kane and Eric Dier, and his father, Pierre Kompany, has claimed that he had previously been subject to approaches from Spurs, Chelsea and Brighton.

Vincent Kompany turned down a move to Tottenham

Speaking about his son’s move to the Allianz Arena, Pierre told Het Laatste Nieuws: “It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again.

“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”

Pierre also insisted that Burnley’s relegation did not have a bearing on Bayern’s perception of his son, with the German giants respecting the fact that he stuck to his principles despite results not going his way at Turf Moor.

He added: “At Bayern, they did not focus blindly on that relegation. They know Burnley should have gotten more points.

“They thought it was good that Vincent does not deny his vision when he falls behind.

“You may have been captain under Pep [Guardiola], you may have the best friends in the world… They judge you on your performance. Bayern are number one in Germany. They are world-class. They leave nothing to chance there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It was well documented that Kompany was one of the candidates on Tottenham’s managerial shortlist last summer.

Interestingly, the other main alternatives that Spurs considered for Ange – Kompany, Oliver Glasner and Arne Slot – have all since landed decent jobs.
