‘Managers should be aware’ – Ex-PL referee tells Conte to strip Lloris of captaincy

Former FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett believes Tottenham should make one of their outfield players captain after the controversial incident in the second half of their 3-1 win over West Ham.

Tottenham ticked almost all the boxes in their win over the Hammers on Sunday, which helped them to move within three points off Arsenal in fourth.

However, one ugly incident, which took place at the start of the second half, has received quite a bit of coverage.

Son Heung-min was seen crumbling to the ground too easily after Kurt Zouma kicked the ball in the South Korean’s direction.

What followed was a major altercation between the two sides, with some West Ham players not happy with the Tottenham forward’s antics.

Anthony Taylor brought Hammers captain Declan Rice over to warn him about his teammates before the match restarted.

Hackett believes that it would have been of help to Taylor if Tottenham’s captain was an outfield player, given that referees usually talk to the captains of both sides during heated situations.

Hackett told Football Insider: “I think Tottenham need a rethink. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have the goalkeeper as the skipper.

“There is no power in law apart from determining which way you are going to kick off if you win the toss.

“It’s very much about being involved in that process. The referee can run along and say ‘Skipper, your number eight is having a bit of a go’.

“That sort of thing is overlooked and managers should be aware that it takes place during play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hackett’s point is a fair one and it explains why goalkeepers are very rarely made captains. However, Lloris is a respected voice in the Spurs dressing room and sets an example to the rest of the squad with his behaviour and professionalism. So, I certainly do not think Conte would consider stripping the Frenchman off the captaincy.
