Manchester United legend claims Spurs star ‘has lost a half-yard of pace’

Andy Cole has said that Harry Kane’s loss of pace is the main reason why the Tottenham man is dropping deep into midfield more frequently.

Kane has struggled for form since being reinstated into the starting eleven following the transfer saga during the summer transfer window.

The striker’s performances against Chelsea and Arsenal, in particular, left a lot to be desired and the 28-year-old has been on the receiving end of some scathing criticism as a result.

While the England captain got a morale-boosting hat-trick against NS Mura on Thursday, it remains to be seen if he would be able to transfer that form into the Premier League, starting with the visit of Aston Villa this afternoon.

Some pundits have accused the striker of dropping too deep on occasions instead of staying as a focal point up front, a criticism that some Spurs fans on social media have tended to agree with.

However, Cole believes that the Kane’s loss of pace is the main reason the striker is dropping deep more often these days.

The Manchester United legend The Kelly & Wrighty Show: “Kane is very intelligent. He drops in even more so now, because he has lost a half-yard of pace.

“You won’t see Kane going one v one against a defender, he would rather drop deep and let the wide man go beyond him.”

Kane has never been the quickest and playing off the last man’s shoulders has never been his biggest strength. That combined with the fact that he is not as effective a presser as the likes of Son or Lucas is why both Mourinho and Nuno have tended to use him a slightly deeper role. His passing range and vision is also up there with the best midfielders in world football.
