Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur (Player Ratings)

Well the season has begun and we have lost our game after a decent performance. 1-0 defeat due to an unlucky own-goal by Walker which should’ve made us want more as a team but we didn’t really produce. I though we lacked creativity (with the best chance coming in from Kane to Eriksen in the 4th minute) and were very “safe” as to keep a strong defensive outlet. I also felt that Alli should’ve come on earlier but for Chadli and not Eriksen, although both had half-and-half of a game and we should’ve switched to a 4-4-2 within a few minutes of conceding the goal. Kane was isolated and kept trying to get into the game but managed to do so only towards the end.

Alderweireld had a fantastic game for me, with some great movement, passing and defending, while Bentaleb was for the first time (and probably last) out of the game with a very poor performance. Davies and Vorm were good backups for Rose and Lloris respectively with both showing alot more confidence than before.

Dier was really good and managed to do his job as a CDM well but he did have moments where he switched off for a split second. I still think the more he plays as one, the more he’ll develop and become a better CDM in due time.

Chadli had one of his off games, getting chance but not quick enough to convert them while Dembele had a great game from his first to the last minute on the pitch. I felt our right side, Walker and Dembele, did a fantastic job keeping Young and Shaw quiet for the most part of it which was important since that’s one dangerous side.

The Toby and Jan partnership is promising and their understanding is very well but at times, the slowed down the tempo of the game which was frustrating.

Overall, a decent performance. No outstanding players who could’ve changed the game. No moment of spark or creativity but obviously a stronger and more defensive minded side than last season. We’ll improve as the season progresses.

Lamela did well pressing the United players but was slow once again upon receiving the ball and passing it. Mason had a decent game and did alright in a slightly deeper position. Not enough time to judge Alli’s performane.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Toby was solid, definite optimism arising from his performance.
Jan looks like it is his purpose to slow the game to a halt when the ball is at his feet. Like a Paulinho in defense.
Walker was tight to his mark, a definite improvement as we have a tendency to give too much space to strong sides.
Davies was strong, but I think we lacked the attacking impetus of the Rose overlap on the left flank – which also makes Chadli less predictable and more effective.
