Marcus Edwards admits he was ‘on edge’ ahead of return to Tottenham

Marcus Edwards has admitted that he was keen to impress on his return to N17 on Wednesday.

Edwards has come on leaps and bounds since departing from Tottenham in 2019, with the youngster’s impressive displays for Vitoria Guimaraes earning him a move to Sporting in January of this year.

The 23-year-old had already notched up nine goal contributions for Sporting this season ahead of the clash on Wednesday (Transfermarkt), and Antonio Conte’s men would have been aware of the danger he posed, given the performance he put in Sporting’s 2-0 win over the Lilywhites last month.

However, Tottenham were not able to stop the winger, whose long-range strike found the bottom corner in the 22nd minute to give Ruben Amorim’s side the lead.

It was a special moment for the former Spurs academy graduate, who admitted that he was keen to impress with many of his friends watching on.

Edwards told The Evening Standard following the 1-1 draw: “Coming back here in front of everyone I know, it was great fun.

“Coming into the game I was naturally on edge, I have got a lot of friends watching. When the game started it was easy, I scored, and a lot of emotions came out.”

However, the winger denied that he had a point to prove against his former employers.

He added: “I don’t feel like [I proved a point], I just play every game the same. The extra motivation was having my friends and family there.”

Reading between the lines, it does sound like Edwards still has some fondness towards Spurs. I would not be surprised if we explore a move for the 23-year-old in January, given that Conte seems to want one more attacking addition to potentially replace Bryan Gil.
