Mason adamant Spurs man ‘should be in the conversation’ for prestigious award

Ryan Mason is adamant that Harry Kane should be one of the favourites to win the PFA Player of the Year award.

Kane has arguably had the best season of his career so far, having scored 32 goals and registered 17 assists in all competitions.

The England captain is currently the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League alongside Mohamed Salah with 22 goals, while also leading the assists charts.

The fact that he has done so in a struggling Tottenham side, who currently sit in sixth place and have had a tumultuous campaign, is a further testament to how good he has been.

However, some will consider Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernades as favourites for the PFA Player of the Year award ahead of the Tottenham star.

Mason insisted that the team’s results this season should not come into the criteria while choosing the winner since the award is about individual performances.

When it was put to the interim Spurs boss that Dias and Fernandes were the favourites for the gong, he told The Evening Standard: “I wasn’t aware Harry wouldn’t be in that conversation because in previous seasons most recently as well players have won that prize having not won the League, we’ve seen that a couple of seasons ago.

“In my humble opinion, Harry Kane has probably been the most influential player in the Premier League this season.

“He’s got the joint-most top goals, most assists as well so if the trophy or prize is won on who is the best player in the Premier League, then Harry has to be in the conversation.

“Harry, consistently over the last five or six years, has been one of the best players in the Premier League and this year has been no different for him.

“The trophy isn’t for the team of the league, it’s for the player of the league, who has been the best player over the course of the season.

“Harry should be in the conversation, of course. He’s one of the best players in the world, we know that, and statistically this season he has probably produced the best numbers.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see why Ruben Dias would be favourite for the award as he has completely transformed the City backline and has been a key reason behind the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

However, I would be livid if Fernandes wins the award over Kane as the England captain has outperformed the Man Utd man this season despite playing for a worse team.
