Some Tottenham fans on social media believe that Juan Foyth may be used as a midfielder during his loan spell at Villarreal this season after he was handed the number 8 shirt by the La Liga side.
The Argentina international completed a season-long loan move to Villarreal on European transfer deadline day.
Reports indicate that the Spanish club will cover the entirety of the defender’s wages over the course of the loan deal and that the club have an option to buy him permanently next summer (Alasdair Gold).
The 22-year-old has found playing time hard to come by since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.
While few would have been surprised at a move away, what did shock some fans was the fact that he was handed the number 8 shirt by Unai Emery’s side.
Some supporters revealed that they had always wanted to see the youngster used in midfield and admitted that they are looking forward to watching him turn out for Villarreal.

Spurs Web Opinion
I can see why some Spurs fans think that Foyth might be used in midfield as his ability on the ball seems to be wasted at centre-back. However, I do not think this is a sign that Emery is planning to push him up the pitch. This is likely a Clint Dempsey-type situation where they gave him the best number that was available. I personally think Foyth’s best position is either at right-back or as a right-sided centre-half in a back three. There are still question marks over his ability to play as a central defender in a back four in the Premier League but perhaps La Liga might be a better fit for him.
