‘Masterful’ – National media hand Spurs star 8/10 rating after World Cup display

Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris has received praise from various French outlets after his performance in the World Cup quarter-final against England last night.

France overcame the challenge of the Three Lions to progress to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud helped Les Bleus to a 2-1 win.

Lloris had to contend with his Spurs teammate Harry Kane and faced the talismanic striker from 12 yards on two occasions. Kane beat Lloris with the first penalty to make it 1-1, but was unable to convert the second, decisive penalty in the 84th minute.

While the France skipper may not have directly prevented Kane from scoring, it was still an impressive display between the sticks for Hugo Lloris on an evening where the 35-year-old also became the most-capped France player of all-time (90Min).

Lloris made a handful of crucial stops to keep England out, and was dominant in the air and around his box too, coming to claim plenty of dangerous crosses as Gareth Southgate’s men tried to find a breakthrough.

His performance did not go unnoticed, with various French outlets giving him positive ratings.

FootMercato said Lloris made “many saving interventions in the first period,” and even “made the perfect save” early in the second half to deny Jude Bellingham. The publication rated Lloris at 7.5 out of 10.

Meanwhile, Goal gave Lloris a 7 out of 10 and celebrated the captain’s “143rd selection, the record for a player of the France team.”

The veteran keeper’s best review came from Sans Filtre, though, with Lloris scoring an 8 out of 10.

The outlet described Lloris as “one of the strong men of this meeting,” praising his “big saves” in the first half, and a “masterful” stop in the second. With “six decisive saves,” Sans Filtre praised Lloris for a “very impressive” performance.

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m not going to lie, I really had hoped Hugo Lloris might have pulled out one of his more shaky performances against us and made a mistake or two like we’ve seen him do for Spurs this year, but it wasn’t to be. The France captain rose to the occasion brilliantly and was crucial to the win for his country.
