MF’S Match Report: Spurs 3-0 Coventry

It’s hard to think ill of a club that has an elephant on its badge, quirky and eccentric in a homogeneous brand driven age, but Coventry and their fans (silent when their team went behind and needed them, noisy when it was all too late) offered so little of consequence that the jumbo would be covering his eyes with embarrassment were he able to do so.

Recent teams we’ve encountered from the lower divisions, Charlton, Stevenage or Leeds for example, have given us a scare or two before being despatched, this lot were timid and toothless from the off and were a bad advert for the third tier. The game was the football equivalent of a gym punch bag workout in the first half followed by a warm down in the second.

Assou-Ekotto, Parker and Naughton in his preferred position all got useful outings and all played well. In Benny, it was nice to see a square peg in a square hole at left back. All who started or came on excelled with only Adebayor the exception. He’s become a bit of target for the moaners and whingers in the North Stand which isn’t helpful of course. Two things. Despite the display of squad depth on Saturday, we don’t have options up front, so why purposely damage the confidence and potentially the attitude of one of them? Secondly, what is it with people who give their own players stick during a game? How can they ever consider it helpful?

Until we eased off we were quality and it was a pleasure to watch. It’s nice to get through without a fuss. Eight wins out of ten now with visit to Harry’s basement huggers next Saturday lunchtime to come.
