Matt Doherty explains how Harry Kane surprised the squad this week

Matt Doherty and Dejan Kulusevski have revealed that Harry Kane surprised them at half-time of Wednesday evening’s friendly match against Nice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Doherty, who started at left wing-back yet again, opened the scoring with a sweetly struck finish on 21 minutes to take his tally to four goals in three friendlies.

Tottenham spurned chances to add to the lead and they were eventually made to pay by Nice at the start of the second half as Antoine Mendy turned the ball home after Dante’s header from a corner kick was blocked by a Spurs defender.

The Sun’s Tom Barclay revealed that Harry Kane only returned to training the day after the clash against Nice so that the striker has some extra time to recover, having played in all of England’s matches at the World Cup.

Kulusevski and Doherty have now revealed that the 29-year-old surprised them in the dressing room at half-time.

The Republic of Ireland international said (via Football.London): “He (Kane) came in at half-time. It was unexpected. We didn’t know. We’re obviously close friends. It was good to have him back.”

Kulusevski added: “Yeah, like I was surprised he came today. I thought he was coming back like Friday so it was good to see him back in the game now. He has a nice break, you know and it was very good to see him. I can’t wait to play with him.”

The penalty miss against France which saw the Three Lions knocked out in the quarter-final, might still be playing on Kane’s mind but Doherty insisted that he is no doubt that the striker will be at his best when he puts on a Spurs shirt.

When asked about Kane’s heartbreak against France, the former Wolves man said: “Let’s see. I think all players use the negative times as a learning curve as a way to motivate them to be better. I don’t think it will be just for his case, I think a lot of people will be that way.

“For us, we want him to come back and be the best version of himself which he has been for most of the season so far. I don’t think we’ve got any questions about how he’s going to return.

“I think he’s going to come back pretty good and I think he’s going to score a lot of goals for us and win us a lot of games.”

Kane will want to find the back of the net as soon as possible so that he can put the heartbreak of the World Cup behind him. The 28-year-old is mentally strong and I do not think the penalty miss will be playing on his mind when he takes to the field at the Brentford Community Stadium on Boxing Day.
