Matt Doherty says one former Spurs teammate was up there with Harry Kane

Matt Doherty has named Gareth Bale alongside Harry Kane when asked to name the best players he has played with in his career.

Doherty’s decision to pick Kane is far from surprising, with the striker undoubtedly being one of the best players to have ever graced the Premier League.

However, the former Tottenham right-back only spent one season with Bale when the Weslhman returned to the North London club on loan during the 2020-21 season.

Not only was the pacy winger in the twilight of his career at the time but he also struggled to get starts under his belt when Jose Mourinho was in charge. It says a lot about Bale’s quality that despite his lack of game time, he still ended the season with an astonishing 16 goals to his name (Transfermarkt).

It looks like Doherty certainly saw enough in training from the 34-year-old to be mightly impressed, although the Irishman did put his close friend Kane a tier above the rest.

When asked to name the best player he has played with, the right-back told Wolves’ official TikTok page: “Gareth Bale was top, I had a little stint in Spain where I played with Griezmann and Morata, but there’s only one really, Harry Kane.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is a massive shame that there were no fans in the stadium during the year that Bale was back at Tottenham as a result of Covid. The supporters deserved a chance to see their returning hero in the flesh and the atmosphere at the stadium would have been fantastic that campaign had fans been allowed.
