Matt Doherty’s teammate explains why Spurs transfer is ‘fantastic move for him’

Matt Doherty’s Republic of Ireland team-mate, Jeff Hendrick believes that the right-back has made the correct step by sealing a move to Tottenham after ten years at Wolves.

Spurs reportedly agreed a £13.4million fee with Wolves for a transfer of the full-back, who has been one of the most productive attacking players in his position for the last two years.

Jose Mourinho admitted that the 28-year-old is a player he always dreaded coming up against and revealed his delight at being able to add him to the squad.

The experienced defender took to social media to send an emotional message to Wolves fans after making more than 300 appearances for them across League One, the Championship, and the Premier League.

Hendrik, who recently completed a move to Newcastle United, believes that Doherty deserved a big move for the quality he has shown at the Molineux Stadium over many years and backed him to do well in North London.

When asked about Doherty’s rumoured move to Spurs before the transfer was officially confirmed on Sunday, Henrik told Football.London: “It would be a fantastic move for him. Matt’s a great lad, he’s done brilliantly there at Wolves.

“He’s had many years there now and it would be nice if he gets that move.

“He’s done an awful lot with Wolves – he’s been promoted from League One to the Championship and the Championship to the Premier League and he helped them get into the Europa League.

“He scores goals from right wing-back, he defends, he’s a big lad and I’ll wish him all the best if it goes through. It would be great to see. He definitely deserves it.”

Looking at the way Wolves fans, as well as the way those who have played alongside Doherty, talk about him, it is clear that the right-back is a down to earth character. Apart from the qualities he will bring to the side on the pitch, it also appears as if he will be a great addition to the dressing room.
