Mauricio Pochettino heaps praise on player trying to break into the first team

Tottenham Hotspur are currently without their keeper and captain, Hugo Lloris, after the Frenchman dislocated his elbow against Brighton in the Premier League last month.

Out until the new year, understudy Paulo Gazzaniga has now taken over Lloris’ position between the sticks in a Tottenham shirt.

With the first-choice out for a good while, this is perhaps Gazzaniga’s best chance to break into the first-team and earn himself that number one jersey for good.

It has been a case of so far so good for the Argentine too, after he put in a man of the match worthy display against league leaders Liverpool last Sunday.

Gazzaniga pulled out 12 saves to keep his side in the game and the scoreline respectable, earning him great praise from a number of Spurs fans.

Mauricio Pochettino has been heaping the praise on his fellow Argentine this week, stating that it’s a great opportunity for him.

He said (Tottenham): “Paulo has been with us for two years and knows very well how we want to play. He has responded every time Hugo has been out. He has unbelievable quality and great potential. For a goalkeeper, he’s still young (he’s 27). It’s a great opportunity for him with Hugo out injured and we are happy for him because he’s a great professional.”
