“Means nothing” – How some Spurs fans reacted to Toby Alderweireld’s contract extension

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed today that they have taken up the option of extending Toby Alderweireld’s contract by one year.

This extension means that the 29-year-old is contracted to the club until 2020 but it also automatically activates a clause in the Belgian’s contract whereby the club will have to accept any offer of £25million for the defender from next summer.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed earlier this month that the club would be taking up the option of extending the 29-year-old’s contract.

The defender’s representatives reportedly fell out with the club’s hierarchy during contract negotiations last year.

As a result, Alderweireld found himself restricted to just 14 appearances in the league last season with Pochettino opting to start with Davinson Sanchez ahead of the Belgian for several games. Subsequently, there was speculation linking the defender to Manchester United last summer but a move never materialised in the end.

However, Alderweireld has featured in almost all of Tottenham’s game this season but the club and the player don’t appear to be any closer to an agreement. Here’s how Spurs fans reacted to the news.

It is apparent from the fans’ reaction that most of them are hoping that the club and the player come to an agreement before the end year.
