Tottenham Hotspur confirmed today that they have taken up the option of extending Toby Alderweireld’s contract by one year.
This extension means that the 29-year-old is contracted to the club until 2020 but it also automatically activates a clause in the Belgian’s contract whereby the club will have to accept any offer of £25million for the defender from next summer.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed earlier this month that the club would be taking up the option of extending the 29-year-old’s contract.
The defender’s representatives reportedly fell out with the club’s hierarchy during contract negotiations last year.
As a result, Alderweireld found himself restricted to just 14 appearances in the league last season with Pochettino opting to start with Davinson Sanchez ahead of the Belgian for several games. Subsequently, there was speculation linking the defender to Manchester United last summer but a move never materialised in the end.
However, Alderweireld has featured in almost all of Tottenham’s game this season but the club and the player don’t appear to be any closer to an agreement. Here’s how Spurs fans reacted to the news.
Means nothing except we are going to lose him for £25m. Embarrassing

Paying him and Eriksen £150-180k a week would cost £7.8-9.5 million per season pp.
Over 5 years that’s £39-48 million pp.
Now I’m no businessman but this would be far cheaper than replacing the players plus their wages!
Pay the men!!

£25m release clause though? @SpursOfficial what are you doing? Give this man the money he wants plus bonuses as he will be impossible to replace. Same for Eriksen, impossible to replace without paying out a lot of money which we don't do. Come on, get it together.

Pay him what he wants , this is why we won’t ever win leagues with levy, we won’t pay the best players in the league the going rate with the other best players in the league

I want to reiterate that Toby Alderweireld’s agent is a moron. His client has ‘languished’ on £50k/w for four years, while all his peers have tripled/quadrupled their salaries with incremental contracts and can still leave whenever they want, just like Bale/Modric/Berbatov did.

It is apparent from the fans’ reaction that most of them are hoping that the club and the player come to an agreement before the end year.
Have something to tell us about this article?
Levy needs to man up and listen to the players and manager, start paying wages in line with other clubs otherwise players will listen to offers from other clubs, and move on , then the clubs goes backwards to being a selling club again!!
Money needs to be spent to improve the club and encourage good quality players to the club!
If Levy and Joe are not willing to do this then they need to move on for the sake of the club and fans!
Fans are getting fed up with the boards lack of commitment!!
The new stadium will increase the value of the club drastically… This should be a sign that Joe Lewis may be wanting to sell the club before long…
