Paul Merson has become the latest pundit to praise rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Sam Johnstone and backed the goalkeeper to join a top club in the summer transfer window.
Johnstone has had a solid campaign so far in what is his first taste of Premier League football.
Were it not for his impressive displays between the sticks, West Brom might be in even more trouble than they currently are.
Hugo Lloris has come under a lot of criticism over recent weeks after making some poor mistakes and some reports have suggested that Tottenham are eyeing the Baggies goalkeeper as a potential replacement for the Frenchman.
Merson has now admitted that he expects the 27-year-old to make a big move in the summer should Sam Allardyce fail to keep West Brom in the Premier League.
When asked about Johnstone, the former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports News (2:56pm, February 20, 2021): “He is a good goalkeeper, another one who is doing himself massive favours.
“If West Brom get relegated, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a top club. He has done everything right.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Given the various positions across the pitch where we need to strengthen, I suspect that replacing Hugo Lloris will not really be a priority for us in the next transfer window. However, I would not be opposed to us potentially picking up Johnstone in a cut-price deal if West Brom go down. The 27-year-old would be an upgrade over Hart and would offer Lloris genuine competition for the number one shirt.
