Merson tips Newcastle to move for Spurs and Man United duo in January

Paul Merson believes Newcastle United will make an approach to sign Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli in January.

The 25-year-old has had a difficult time making an impact at Tottenham so far this season, despite being handed a regular chunk of game time by Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Portuguese coach has altered Alli’s role into a slightly deeper position in midfield, electing to side with his work rate as opposed to offensive productivity.

Despite that, he has struggled to get close to the performances and standards he set for himself under former manager Mauricio Pochettino and hasn’t had too much of a consistent say during matches.

Arsenal icon Merson believes Newcastle, fresh off their £300 million takeover from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), could shape up a move for Alli in the winter transfer window as part of a change of scenery for the midfielder.

In his column for Sky Sports, he wrote: “The sort of players Newcastle will be in for in January are Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli.

“Good players, who will be better than what Newcastle have, but they can’t get into their own teams. What’s that going to win you? Nothing.”

Newcastle could well make a move to sign a player like Alli in January, as they cannot go all guns blazing and splash all the cash at once. A change of scenery for Alli does seem like the next best thing for him, because there still clearly is a very good player in there.
