Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur do not have what it takes to win the Premier League title.
Spurs currently sit in third place, six points behind league leaders Liverpool and two behind Manchester City.
The Lillywhites have had a fantastic festive period where they have consistently won games and cut short the points gap with the front two.
Merson, however, insists that Tottenham will eventually succumb to the pressure like they always do.
The 50-year-old suggested that Tottenham only play well when the pressure is off and that they melt as soon as there is a bit of pressure on them.
He pinpointed Spurs’ recent home loss to Wolves as being evidence of this fact.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ show, The Debate, Merson said, “They’re six points behind… But we see what happens with Tottenham, don’t we? They get into a good position, they’ve got Wolves at home and then they melt.”
“When the pressure is off they go three goals up in 20 minutes at Cardiff. The shackles are off. Three days before they have a chance to win the Premier League and they didn’t have a shot in the second-half! So for me I don’t give them a chance – I don’t think they’ve got it.”
Merson is just the latest Sky Sports pundit to rule out Tottenham’s chances of winning the title after both Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville insisted last week that it was a two horse race.
